Sky to offer downloadable content for mobile devices from 2012?

Sky has hinted that it could introduce downloadable content (DLC) for mobile devices as early as next year.

Sky Movies and Sky Box Office director Ian Lewis has teased that customers will soon be able to download programmes to smartphones and tablets to watch offline, Tech Radar reports.

The network's subscribers can currently download films and television shows to view on a PC, and stream content on various devices via the Sky Go app. Downloads are expected to be added to the application across multiple platforms.

"I'm not going to put a date on it, but I don't think you'll be asking me that question in a year's time," Lewis said of DLC for mobiles. "But that's not me putting a timeframe on it."

The director went on to say that Sky's efforts to offer customers new ways of viewing content are ongoing, promising to showcase "more innovations" over the next year.

"When we hit the 10 million subscribers mark, it was the same week we launched Anytime and the week before we launched 3D," he added. "It's just a part of Sky to be looking for the next thing and we already know what we are planning to do in December and March.

"In 12 months' time we'll definitely have even more innovations to show off."
